CMLL

El Verdugo, real name Francisco Ortiz, who was a star here in the 80s and 90s, passed away on 4/22 at the age of 57. Verdugo was the brother of the more famous Pirata Morgan, and the trio of Morgan & Hombre Bala & Verdugo were one of the best working heel trios of the 80s. He also wrestled under names like Trogladita in the 90s and Black Bull in the late 00s. He was still wrestling regularly on smaller promotion shows as late as last year. There was a benefit show for him in December to help him pay medical bills, so his health had deteriorated this past year.

The 4/17 show at Arena Mexico drew only 3,000 fans for the Super Sky Team of Mistico & Volador Jr. & Valiente beating Negro Casas & Cavernario & Mr. Niebla. The semi saw Marco Corleone & La Sombra & Maximo beat Ultimo Guerrero & Thunder & Rey Escorpion in two straight falls. The second fall finish saw Rey Escorpion turn on Ultimo Guerrero by tripping him, setting up his loss, and kicking their feud back off. Corleone of late on Fridays has been with Los Ingobernables, who are the face trio that are really heels, but on Sundays and Tuesdays he’s been teaming with the other faces with no issues.

The 4/24 show is headlined by Mistico & Volador Jr. & Valiente vs. Mephisto & Ephesto & Luciferno and a Parejas increibles with Sombra & Ultimo Guerrero & Niebla Roja vs. Dragon Rojo Jr. & Escorpion & Thunder.

The 4/19 show drew 2,500 and featured a tournament for a shot at the Mexican national trios titles. Atlantis & Delta & Guerrero Maya Jr. won the four-team tourney beating Mephisto & Ephesto & Luciferno in the finals, after they had beaten Euforia & Gran Guerrero & Niebla Roja in the semis.

The 4/26 show at Arena Mexico is pushed as something big, as to celebrate both the 59th anniversary of pro wrestling at Arena Mexico, and it’s also the annual Kids Day show, which is one of the biggest drawing events of the year. There is a cultural tour of Arena Mexico also taking place that day for the anniversary. All kids coming will get toys. The main event is a ten man elimination (Cibernetico) match with Sombra, La Mascara, Corleone, Polvora, Titan, Ripper, Morphosis, Cavernario, Dragon Lee and Kamaitachi, plus Negro Casas & Mr. Niebla & Felino defend the Mexican national trios titles against the 4/19 tournament winners.

CMLL is dropping the Friday night shows in Guadalajara, which started weekly in February and were a flop, and is going back to a Sunday and Tuesday schedule there.

The All Elite promotion drew 3,000 fans on 4/19 in Guadalajara with Dr. Wagner Jr. beating Rush via DQ for a low blow. The match had super heat since Wagner hasn’t been in CMLL in years and it’s like an all-time legend facing the top modern star, but it still didn’t draw close to a full house. Both issued challenges for a rematch.
